I’m a Professor in the English Department of Lingnan, which I joined in 1998. Previously I taught at the National University of Singapore, Chiang Mai and Silpakorn Universities, Thailand, The National University of Rwanda, and was a Visiting Professor at Karl-Franzens University of Graz in Austria. I studied for my B.A/M.A at Jesus College, Oxford, my M.A in TESOL at the Institute of Education, London University, and my Ph.D at University College, London. My main academic interests are Metaphor, including Critical Metaphor Analysis, Stylistics or the Language of Literature, Critical Discourse Analysis, including Ecolinguistics, and the Language of Humour. My books and monographs include The Language of Metaphors (Routledge 1997, 2nd edition 2011), Critical Reading and Writing (Routledge 2000), Washing the Brain: Metaphor and Hidden Ideology Benjamins 2007), Explorations in Stylistics (Equinox 2008) and Meaning and Humour(Cambridge University Press 2012). Besides these publications I am responsible for compiling the interactive web-site Metalude (Metaphor at Lingnan University Department of English), an interactive database of 9000+ lexicalized conventional metaphors in English arranged into semantic categories. I have been working on a related project An English-Chinese Thesaurus of Metaphors, which I hope to publish in the near future. I teach Discourse Analysis, the Language of Literature, and Words: their Form and Meaning. My main extra-curricular interests are singing classical music, and I regularly give concerts at Lingnan.

This book explores some of the developments in Stylistics since its pioneer, Roman Jakobson identified the patterning of the message as the poetic function. It analyses in turn Golding’s Pincher Martin, Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Housman’s A Shropshire Lad, Elizabeth Jennings’ poem ‘One Flesh’, Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day, and a range of poems by John Donne. The analyses show how Jakobson’s emphasis on the message gives way to emphasis on the code or on undermining the code (in the Golding and Donne chapters), on the context (in the Rowling and Golding chapters), on the reader’s response (in the Housman chapter), on the relationship between the addresser’s and the addressee’s shared assumptions and their use of pragmatic principles (in the Pinter and Ishiguro chapters). The pivotal Jennings’ chapter shows how these different stylistic perspectives can be applied variously to the same text.

This collection of essays will be especially useful for students of Stylistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level as it illustrates the use of a range of analytical tools: Systemic Functional Grammar’s analysis of transitivity and theme; pragmatic theories of co-operation, politeness, presupposition and inferencing; and conceptual metaphor theory. Additionally it demonstrates central stylistic concepts such as foregrounding, and how to analyse rhythmical, lexical, grammatical and semantic patterning.
